eSIM vs Physical SIM: Privacy
Which is more private? It depends on how you buy it.
The Short Answer
eSIMs are generally more private than physical SIMs, but only if you buy them the right way. A physical SIM bought with cash is very private. An eSIM bought with Monero and delivered via PGP is even more private. An eSIM bought with a credit card and an account is less private than either.
The privacy difference isn't the SIM technology. It's how you acquire it.
Physical SIM: The Privacy Baseline
Pros:
- Can be bought with cash. No payment trail.
- No account required at point of sale in many countries.
- Physically removable. Swap between phones easily.
- No digital purchase record tied to an email or account.
Cons:
- Many countries now require ID registration for SIM cards (KYC laws).
- Physical purchase leaves a location trail (where you bought it).
- IMSI can be tracked by cell towers. Same as eSIM.
- Requires physical access. Can't buy remotely.
eSIM: The Privacy Opportunity
Pros:
- Can be bought remotely. No physical location trail.
- Crypto payments leave no identity trail. With Monero, none at all.
- No physical card to lose or have confiscated.
- PGP-encrypted delivery means even the QR code is private.
- Multiple eSIMs on one phone. Separate work, travel, and personal lines.
Cons:
- Most eSIM providers require accounts and email. simZILLA doesn't.
