Installing a simZILLA eSIM takes about a minute once you know where the buttons are. This guide shows the exact steps for iPhone and Android, explains what to do if your QR code gives you trouble, and covers the few things that can go wrong along the way.

What you need before you start

You need an unlocked phone that supports eSIM. Carrier-locked phones bought on a payment plan sometimes block eSIMs from other providers, and some older handsets do not support eSIM at all. If you are unsure, check our compatibility page before you buy.

You also need your simZILLA order confirmation. After you pick a destination and data plan and pay with Bitcoin, Monero, USDT/USDC, ETH, or card, your QR code appears on the confirmation screen. We can also email it to you. If you provided a PGP key, the email is encrypted. Keep that QR code private. It is single-use, which means once it has been scanned and installed on a device, it cannot be scanned again on another phone. Do not test it on your friend's phone first.

Install your simZILLA eSIM on iPhone

  1. Open Settings, then tap Cellular or Mobile Data.
  2. Tap Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan.
  3. Choose Use QR Code.
  4. Hold your phone up to the simZILLA QR code on your screen or printout. Make sure the entire code fits inside the camera frame.
  5. When prompted, label the line something useful, like simZILLA Japan or simZILLA EU. This matters more than you think if you carry multiple eSIMs.
  6. Choose the line you want active for data. Most travelers keep their home SIM active for calls and texts and use the simZILLA line for mobile data. That way your regular number still works for incoming calls and messages, but your data goes through the local network.
  7. Turn on Data Roaming for the simZILLA line once it appears under Settings → Cellular. The per-line Data Roaming toggle only shows up after the eSIM is installed and ON. If you can't see it, toggle Airplane Mode, wait 10 seconds, turn it off, and reopen Settings.
  8. Wait thirty seconds to a minute. Your phone needs to register with the local carrier. Once you see signal bars and a data icon, open a browser and load a page to confirm you are online.

If your phone asks whether to use the new eSIM as your primary or secondary line, pick primary for data only if you want all apps and maps to run through the local plan. Keep voice and messaging on your home SIM so you do not miss calls.

Install your simZILLA eSIM on Android

The exact menu names change between Samsung, Google Pixel, Xiaomi, OnePlus, and Motorola, but the process is the same. On Samsung devices, look under Settings > Connections > SIM card manager > Add eSIM. On Pixel phones, it is usually Settings > Network and internet > SIMs > Download a SIM. Other brands hide it under Mobile network, SIM cards, or Connections.

  1. Open the right menu for your phone and tap Add eSIM, Add mobile plan, or Download a SIM.
  2. Choose Scan QR code.
  3. Point the camera at your simZILLA QR code until the phone reads it.
  4. Follow the prompts to label the eSIM and pick which line handles data.
  5. Turn on Data roaming for the simZILLA line when the phone asks, or do it manually in the same SIM settings menu.
  6. Give the phone one to two minutes to connect. You should see signal bars and a mobile data icon. Open a browser to test.

If your phone does not show an Add eSIM option, check whether your carrier or manufacturer has locked the feature. Some budget Android phones sold in certain markets ship without eSIM support even when the chipset technically supports it.

What to do if your QR code expires or fails

Your simZILLA QR code is generated when you complete your order and is tied to that specific eSIM profile. It is a single-use code. After you scan it once, it is gone from the pool of available activations. That is normal. It is also why you should not share it or test it on a spare phone.

If the QR code fails to scan, try these things in order.

First, brighten your screen and make sure the code is not cropped or blurry. QR codes are not magic. They need contrast and a clean frame.

Second, if your phone says the QR code is in the wrong format or unsupported, use manual entry. On iPhone, tap Enter Details Manually instead of scanning. On Android, look for Need help? or Enter activation code, then paste the details from your simZILLA order page. Manual entry works even when the camera scanner acts up. The QR code is just a shortcut for the same activation string.

Third, if your order page shows a retry or replacement option, generate a fresh QR code from there. We issue replacement codes when the original fails because of a network or supplier issue.

If nothing works, email info@simzilla.io with your order ID. We will sort it. No chatbot, no ticket queue, no hold music. Just someone who knows how eSIMs work.

Troubleshooting

No service after activation: This is the most common issue, and the fix is almost always the same. Turn on Data roaming for the simZILLA eSIM line. Then toggle Airplane Mode on, wait ten seconds, and turn it off again. Wait two to three minutes. Your phone needs time to register with the local network. About nine out of ten no service reports clear up after this. If you still see no signal, double-check that the simZILLA line is selected as your active data line. Some phones quietly switch back to your home SIM after a reboot.

Data works but apps are slow or fail to load: You may need to set the right APN. Most modern eSIMs configure this automatically, but some Android phones and a few older iPhones need it set by hand. Open the SIM or cellular settings for the simZILLA line and look for Access Point Names. If there is no entry, or if the auto-filled one looks wrong, add the APN from your order confirmation or from the FAQ page for your destination. Save it, restart mobile data, and test again.

Calls and texts on my home number are not coming through: That usually means your phone is trying to route everything through the simZILLA eSIM. Go to Cellular or SIM settings, set your home SIM as the default for voice and messaging, and keep the simZILLA line active for data only.

Unable to activate eSIM error: This usually means your device is not unlocked, does not support eSIM, or has a carrier restriction. Check our compatibility list. If your phone came from a carrier on a payment plan, call them and ask for an unlock. Some carriers refuse until the device is paid off. We cannot bypass that lock. It is carrier nonsense, not a simZILLA issue.

QR code says it has already been used: You probably scanned it once and then tried again on another device, or the original scan partially completed and left the profile stuck. Email info@simzilla.io with your order ID and we can look at whether a replacement code is available.

Keep your home SIM in its lane while you travel

Once your simZILLA eSIM is active, turn off data roaming on your home SIM. Your home carrier probably charges outrageous rates for international data, and even a few background updates can trigger a bill. Keep your home SIM active for calls and texts if you need it, but make sure the simZILLA line handles all data.

If you are traveling for more than a few days, get comfortable checking which SIM your phone is using before you stream video or run a hotspot. Your phone usually remembers the setting, but software updates and restarts occasionally flip it back.

That is it. Pick a plan, scan the code, toggle data roaming, and you are online. No airport kiosk, no photocopied passport, no surprise fees. Just a connection that works the way travel should work.
